We had previously posted about this shoot at the time it happened on our social media platforms, but it is a project that had some interesting elements for videographers, so we’re adding in some extra details here…

Sometimes a video shoot can be very challenging and tricky, with time constraints, uncontrollable factors, and dealing with trying to fly a drone near an airport! (We’re CAA approved and were in touch with Glasgow Air-Traffic Control throughout, so hold up on sending this to the Daily Mail!)

For shoots such as this, it is so great to work with the clients we do – in particular Kompan Scotland. They made it run smooth, feel like a breeze, and made the whole process an absolute joy.

While there were some challenges such as the weather and the extremely short time we had with the kids at the event, it was essentially: film the kids having a great time on the amazing playground equipment.

I was thinking “I wish I had a playground like this around where I was growing up!” (Kompan Zimbabwe on the books…?), but I was able to experience it all vicariously through the kids we were filming.

Thank you Kompan for another great project!

For the video geeks:

Everybody was in awe over the Zhiyun crane, and so was I. Having used the DJI Osmo for a couple of years, this new equipment was actually fun to use, reliable, and convenient. It also got some rain on it and kept on powering through – all day battery life. I LOVE it! Highly recommended (especially the new Version 2)

For the Drone Operators:

Before this job I’d never needed to contact Air Traffic Control (due to being sub-7KG on all my drones). We usually fly so remotely far away from airports that reporting it would be more of a nuisance to the nearest ATC. When it came to shooting nearby Glasgow airport for this project it was important to let them know, even if we were not going above 50m!

All I can say about the experience is that NATS, and in particular ATC in Glasgow, are a pleasure to deal with. Extremely supportive and understanding. They are helpful, and were clearly reassured and pleased that an operator had contacted them to let them know what was happening, even if it was far away from the airport itself and well away from the flight paths.

It made the whole experience even more rewarding. Also it was my first commercial outing with the DJI Mavic. Dream machine!

Tomorrow we’ll be heading back up to Glasgow for another similar shoot with Kompan Scotland, and I’ll be putting the experience gained on this outing to good use then.
